San Julián announces 24-hour blockade over diesel prices for large consumers

Producers in San Julián say 120 liters of diesel will not cover their needs during the winter harvest. In response, the municipality's social organizations announced a 24-hour road blockade for Wednesday.

The protest targets Supreme Decree 5676 and its new conditions for buying diesel. The rules set a reference price of 18 bolivianos per liter for large consumers and direct users, while limiting access to regulated-price fuel to 120 liters per month.

The restrictions have drawn particular concern from producers harvesting sunflower and sorghum. During a news conference announcing the pressure measure, one representative said, "With 120 liters, we cannot do anything in the productive sector." Leaders also complained about fuel supply problems and demanded that the government honor commitments to guarantee diesel for productive activities.

San Julián Mayor Carlos Vaca backed the organizations and said the municipality would join calls to repeal Decree 5676. "As an authority, we are also standing with the people," Vaca said. He asked the government to send representatives to San Julián to explain the rules and address affected sectors' demands.

The announcement adds to pressure from Santa Cruz's productive organizations. The Cámara Agropecuaria del Oriente called an extraordinary board meeting to discuss diesel supplies and possible action. The Comité Pro Santa Cruz also said its expanded board would consider further pressure measures and a possible gathering of the Santa Cruz civic assembly.
