San Marcos University to launch Peru's first public film school

The National University of San Marcos (UNMSM) in Peru is set to launch the country's first public institution dedicated to film education: the Professional School of Cinematography and Audiovisual. This new academic offering promises to expand opportunities for young Peruvians interested in pursuing specialized training in filmmaking and the audiovisual arts.

The establishment of the school is the result of an inter-institutional agreement signed between UNMSM and the Ministry of Culture (Mincul). University officials consider this a significant achievement, marking a crucial step toward realizing a long-held aspiration within Peru's audiovisual community. The agreement outlines specific actions for the creation and implementation of the educational space.

Gisella Escobar, the Vice Minister of Cultural Heritage and Industries, and Dr. Marcel Velázquez, Dean of the Faculty of Letters and Human Sciences at UNMSM, signed the document. This collaboration is expected to foster talent development and contribute to the growth of Peru's audiovisual industry, which is recognized for generating employment and celebrating the nation's diverse cultural heritage.

This cinematic program joins another recent academic expansion at UNMSM, which on June 12 approved the creation of the Professional School of Materials Science and Nanotechnology. These developments underscore the university's commitment to broadening its educational offerings and reinforcing its leadership in research, technological advancement, and the cultural industries.
