San Miguelito Approves Alliance to Rescue Rivers and Green Spaces

San Miguelito's Municipal Council has given the green light to a significant environmental initiative, approving an agreement to collaborate with the National Association for Nature Conservation (Ancon). The partnership aims to tackle pressing environmental issues within the district, focusing on the recovery of rivers and green spaces.

The approved Municipal Agreement No. 35 authorizes the district's mayor to sign a cooperation and technical assistance agreement with Ancon. This alliance will drive projects for integrated waste management, recycling, urban greening, and the restoration of water bodies. The council highlighted the district's substantial waste generation, producing between 250 and 400 tons of solid waste daily, which accounts for 20-25% of the waste in Panama Province. This has led to approximately 250 illegal dumpsites, negatively impacting local streams and rivers, including the Matías Hernández River, whose pollution flows into the Bay of Panama.

The agreement specifically includes coordinating efforts to restore the Juan Díaz River and its tributary, El Palomo. It also outlines programs for environmental education and strengthening municipal capacities. Ancon will serve as the implementing partner and technical coordinator for these projects. The collaboration is anticipated to bolster progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly those concerning clean water and sanitation, as well as sustainable cities and communities.
