Sanchez Criticizes EU 'Ignorance' on Migration, Calls for Urgent Meeting

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has sharply criticized European governments for their reactions to the migration crisis at the Ceuta and Melilla enclaves bordering Morocco. He sent a letter to EU institutions expressing "serious concern" over what he described as reactions driven by "ignorance or political interests." Sanchez is urging an urgent meeting of the bloc's interior ministers to "reaffirm that the security of external borders is a shared responsibility of all member states."

The crisis saw a surge in migrants attempting to reach Spanish territory, with 67 bodies recovered after attempting the sea crossing. The border crossing at Melilla, which had been closed for 36 hours due to migration pressure, reopened gradually.

Italy and Denmark are spearheading a letter to Brussels, signed by 22 countries, advocating for a unified EU approach. However, Spain and France are not among the signatories. The situation has highlighted deep divisions within the EU on how to manage migration flows and border security.
