Santa Cruz journalist Roberto Méndez assumes presidency of Bolivia's ANPB for 2026-2029

In a significant shift for Bolivia's journalistic community, Roberto Méndez Herrera has been elected president of the Association of Journalists of Bolivia (ANPB) for the 2026-2029 term. Méndez, a respected journalist, lawyer, and university professor hailing from Santa Cruz, breaks a long-standing tradition where the ANPB's leadership was predominantly based in La Paz.

His election at the XII National Congress signifies a new era for the organization, with a stated focus on institutional strengthening, internal reforms, and a robust defense of press freedom and journalistic practice across Bolivia. Méndez brings a wealth of experience from his career in print media and his current role as director of the Social Communication program at the Autonomous Gabriel René Moreno University (UAGRM) in Santa Cruz.

The new leadership structure emphasizes broader regional participation. The executive board includes vice president Marco Flores Nogales from Oruro, general secretary Adrián Montoya Laura from Potosí, and secretaries from Chuquisaca and Pando, among others. This inclusive approach aims to enhance the ANPB's national representation and ensure diverse voices are involved in its direction.

Beyond the executive leadership, the congress also established the organization's Tribunal de Honor. This body will be responsible for upholding the ANPB's principles and statutes, ensuring adherence to ethical standards within the profession. The tribunal includes members from various regions, further reflecting the commitment to nationwide inclusivity and the integrity of Bolivian journalism.
