Santiago Wanderers takes Ascenso lead after tough win over San Luis

Santiago Wanderers has seized the top spot in the Chilean Ascenso league following a hard-fought 1-0 victory against San Luis de Quillota. The win, achieved despite playing with a numerical disadvantage for most of the game, propelled the team to the league's summit.

The match took a challenging turn early on for Wanderers' coach Francisco Palladino. In the ninth minute, midfielder Vicente Vargas received a red card for a reckless foul, an incident confirmed by VAR. Despite being reduced to ten men and struggling to create significant scoring opportunities, Wanderers managed to break the deadlock.

Cristóbal Ponce delivered the crucial goal in the 35th minute with a powerful low shot from his left foot. This strike proved to be the only goal of the contest, as the visiting team focused primarily on defending their slim lead against persistent attacks from the home side. San Luis had a few chances, testing goalkeeper Bayron Martínez twice in the second half, but could not find an equalizer.

With this victory, Santiago Wanderers now shares 38 points with Cobreloa but leads the league due to a superior goal difference. San Luis remains in sixth place with 32 points. Wanderers are set to face Magallanes next, while San Luis will play against Deportes Iquique.
