Santos FC Comes From Behind to Beat Macará 2-1 in Copa Sudamericana First Leg

Santos FC secured a crucial 2-1 victory over Ecuador's Deportivo Macará in the first leg of their Copa Sudamericana round of 16 tie. Despite falling behind early, the Brazilian side mounted a comeback to take a slim advantage into the return fixture.

Deportivo Macará struck first in the 5th minute, with former Blooming striker Franco Posse capitalizing on a defensive lapse to put the visitors ahead. However, Santos responded before halftime, as Gabriel Barbosa, widely known as Gabigol, leveled the score in the 44th minute, shifting the momentum.

In the second half, Santos pressed for a winner, with Gabigol having two goals disallowed by VAR in quick succession. The decisive goal came in the 76th minute when Willian Arão converted a low cross, following a setup from Neymar, to seal the 2-1 win for the home side.

The second leg is scheduled for August 20th in Ambato, Ecuador. Santos will aim to defend their narrow lead against Macará to advance in the tournament, while the Ecuadorian team will look to overturn the deficit on home soil. Notably, Miguel Terceros was absent from the Santos squad for this match.
