Sanwo-Olu, Lai Mohammed, Gbenga Daniel to discuss 2027 elections, insecurity at 7th Freedom Online lecture

Nigeria's persistent challenges with insecurity and the potential impact of the 2027 general elections on the nation's future will be the central themes at the seventh annual Freedom Online lecture in Lagos on September 3.

The event, organized by Freedom Online (www.freedomonline.com.ng), will bring together key figures to discuss how to confront insecurity, which is described as a "monster threatening to consume the nation-state called Nigeria." The organizers aim to explore how the upcoming elections can be conducted in a manner that is acceptable to all, laying a solid foundation for the country's development.

We believe that actions of politicians, security agents and INEC officials, before, during and after the election will, one way or the other, decide the fate of the more than 200 million Nigerians in this geographical space.

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu is slated to be the special guest speaker. The event will also feature former Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, as the chairman, and former Ogun State Governor, Gbenga Daniel, as the special guest of honor. Eze Anaba, President of the Nigerian Guild of Editors and Editor of Vanguard, will serve as the chief host.

Obviously, insecurity, part of which is thuggery during elections, leads to poverty, underdevelopment and other social vices.

Organizers highlighted that the actions of politicians, security agents, and electoral commission officials before, during, and after the elections will significantly influence the fate of Nigeria's over 200 million citizens. They stressed that insecurity, including electoral thuggery, directly contributes to poverty, underdevelopment, and other social ills, destabilizing the nation's political, economic, and social fabric.

The lecture seeks to foster dialogue on how to navigate these complex issues, particularly the intersection of elections and insecurity, and to chart a path forward for Nigeria's stability and progress in the global arena.
