Saprissa defeats Mixco 3-0 to advance to Copa Centroamericana quarterfinals

Saprissa of Costa Rica comfortably defeated Guatemala's Mixco 3-0 on Tuesday, securing their passage to the quarterfinals of the Copa Centroamericana. The win maintained Saprissa's flawless record in the group stage, marking their third consecutive victory in as many matches.

The decisive goals came early in the match, with Panamanian forward Newton Williams opening the scoring in the third minute. Gerson Torres extended the lead in the seventh minute, and defender Kendall Waston added a third goal in the 32nd minute. Mixco offered little resistance, and their attempts to threaten the Saprissa goal were thwarted by goalkeeper Abraham Madriz.

With this victory, Saprissa leads Group C with nine points. Honduran club Olimpia follows with six points, while Alianza, Umecit, and Mixco remain without points. The tournament format involves each team playing four group stage matches.

The match, held at the Estadio Ricardo Saprissa in San José, saw Saprissa dominate possession and create numerous chances. A goal by Gerson Torres was disallowed for offside, and Mixco's clearest opportunity came when Lynner García's header struck the post. In the second half, Saprissa managed the game effectively, while Mixco's long-range efforts were saved by Madriz.
