Sarawak, Putrajaya Face Thick Haze Until August 31, Meteorologist Warns

Residents in Sarawak and Putrajaya can expect continued thick haze and reduced visibility as Malaysia's Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) forecasts the smoggy conditions to persist until August 31. The department's weather model analysis indicates that the prevailing southwest winds, combined with a high number of hotspots detected in southern Sumatra and western Kalimantan, are contributing factors to the deteriorating air quality.

The MyCMAQ haze concentration model forecast shows that Sarawak has the potential to be the most affected area, with most districts expected to experience hazy weather at an Unhealthy level.

According to MetMalaysia Director-General Dr. Mohd. Hisham Mohd. Anip, the MyCMAQ (Malaysia Community Multi-scale Air Quality Model) forecast suggests that Sarawak is likely to bear the brunt of the haze. Most districts in the state are anticipated to experience air quality at the 'Unhealthy' level. Concerns are particularly high for August 30 and 31, when some areas in Sarawak could reach the 'Very Unhealthy' threshold.

The haze is also projected to affect other regions. Sabah is expected to experience the effects starting this Saturday. Meanwhile, Johor, Melaka, Negeri Sembilan, Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, and Putrajaya are also bracing for significant haze concentration up to the end of the month. MetMalaysia assures the public that it is continuously monitoring the situation and will provide updated forecasts based on evolving atmospheric conditions.
