Sarco, Top Argentine Scorer at U-20 World Cup, Moves from Leverkusen to Spanish Club Sporting

Argentine striker Alejo Sarco, who led Argentina's attack in the 2025 U-20 World Cup, is set to play for Spanish club Sporting de Gijón. The Second Division club announced a transfer agreement with Germany's Bayer Leverkusen, who retain a buy-back option on the young talent.

Sarco, born in Buenos Aires in January 2006, began his career in the youth divisions of Vélez Sarsfield, where he also debuted in the Argentine first division. He moved to Europe in January 2025, joining Bayer Leverkusen, and made his Bundesliga debut in his first senior year. He was later loaned to Borussia Mönchengladbach in early 2026, playing with their reserve team.

The 18-year-old forward was a standout for Argentina at the 2025 U-20 World Cup in Chile, scoring four goals in seven matches. His performance helped Argentina reach the final, where they were runners-up. He was one goal shy of the tournament's top scorers.

Sporting de Gijón, based in northern Spain, has secured Sarco as their sixth signing for the 2026-2027 season. He has already passed his medical and will immediately join the first team squad under coach Nicolás Larcamón.
