Saskatoon traffic snarled as city records 5th known overpass strike of 2026

Saskatoon experienced significant traffic disruptions Friday evening after a semi-truck carrying a grain bin collided with the 51st Street overpass on Idylwyld Drive. This incident marks the fifth known overpass strike in the city this year, causing the grain bin to become lodged beneath the bridge and block a merge lane.

While southbound lanes on Idylwyld Drive remained open, police warned that the removal and reloading of the grain bin would lead to considerable delays. Drivers were advised to seek alternate routes as the situation unfolded.

This latest collision follows a series of similar incidents in March. The most severe occurred on March 5, when a semi-truck carrying an excavator hit the Highway 16 overpass, causing over $283,000 in damages. The driver in that case pleaded guilty and was fined $11,200, with the City of Saskatoon also pursuing legal action against the trucking company for repair costs.

Another overpass strike on March 11 resulted in charges against both the driver and the contracting company for operating a vehicle in a manner that damaged city infrastructure. Police have not yet stated whether charges will be laid in connection with Friday's collision.
