Saudi Arabia chairs cabinet, discusses maritime security and condemns Iranian attacks

Saudi Arabia's Cabinet, chaired by King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, convened to discuss recent diplomatic engagements aimed at bolstering bilateral and multilateral cooperation. The session focused on enhancing partnerships across various sectors to achieve mutual interests and support regional and international security and stability.

A significant development highlighted was the welcoming of the operational activation of the Saudi-led Multinational Maritime Defense Alliance. This alliance marks a new phase of joint action designed to ensure full operational readiness, safeguard maritime security, protect the freedom of navigation in vital waterways, and support the continuity of global trade and supply chains.

The Cabinet unequivocally condemned what it described as repeated Iranian attacks on commercial vessels and tankers. These actions were characterized as a dangerous escalation and a direct threat to maritime navigation safety and security. The statement affirmed that such attacks constitute a grave violation of international laws and norms and defy Security Council resolutions that mandate respect for the freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz.

In bilateral relations, the establishment of the Saudi-Sudanese Coordination Council was noted as an extension of both nations' commitment to institutionalized joint coordination. The council aims to advance cooperation and integration through tangible initiatives and projects.

The Cabinet also commended Saudi Arabia's successful presidency of the 16th UNCCD Conference of the Parties (COP16), which focused on combating land degradation and desertification, enhancing water and food security, and promoting sustainable development. Furthermore, on World Humanitarian Day, the Kingdom's pioneering humanitarian role and its position among leading global donors were recognized.
