Saudi Arabia Forms Maritime Alliance to Secure Bab al-Mandab Strait

Saudi Arabia has announced the formation of a maritime defense alliance comprising 14 nations. The alliance aims to bolster maritime security and ensure safe navigation around the strategically vital Bab al-Mandab Strait, which connects the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden.

The move follows recent threats from Yemen's Iran-backed Houthi rebels, who declared they would blockade Saudi Arabia and claimed attacks on oil tankers and facilities. The strait is a crucial artery for Saudi crude oil exports, especially as the Strait of Hormuz faces disruptions due to regional conflicts.

Saudi Arabia's Ministry of Defense stated the alliance's objectives include enhancing maritime safety, preserving freedom of navigation, securing international trade routes and energy supply chains, and protecting shared maritime interests. The ministry also noted that 43 countries and the EU delegation attended a meeting in Riyadh to discuss the alliance, with 14 nations confirming their support and others expected to join.

The Houthis currently control Yemen's capital Sanaa and most northern areas, while the internationally recognized government holds the majority of the south. Saudi Arabia is a key ally of the Yemeni government. This development follows the first direct clashes between Saudi forces and the Houthis in years earlier this month, which threatened a fragile ceasefire.
