Saudi Arabia to invest $7 billion in three theme parks near Paris

Saudi Arabia is set to invest six billion euros ($7 billion) in the development of three theme parks near Paris, a significant undertaking announced during Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman's visit to France. The agreement, signed via a memorandum of understanding, marks a substantial foreign investment aimed at creating a new global entertainment destination.

The ambitious project will be spearheaded by Qiddiya, a subsidiary of Saudi Arabia's sovereign wealth fund. The French presidency anticipates the parks will generate around 22,000 direct jobs, potentially rivaling the employment figures of Disneyland Paris. This "colossal" project is seen as a major boost to the French economy and tourism sector.

Interestingly, the inspiration for one of the theme parks reportedly stems from a personal connection between President Macron and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. During a meeting in Riyadh in December 2024, they discovered a mutual passion for manga, particularly "Dragon Ball Z." This shared interest has led to plans for at least one manga-themed park, though the themes for the other two remain undisclosed.

The development is planned in stages, with construction expected to span several years. While an opening date has not been set, the project signifies a deepening cultural and economic relationship between Saudi Arabia and France. The French presidency has stated that attracting such projects does not involve lecturing other nations on their internal affairs, referencing Saudi Arabia's human rights record.
