Saudi Arabia urges Iraq to prevent attacks from its territory

Saudi Arabia has strongly urged the Iraqi government to implement all necessary measures to ensure its territory is not used as a launchpad for attacks, following the interception of multiple drones originating from Iraq. The Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement condemning the "reprehensible drone attacks perpetrated by Iran-backed militias in Iraq."

The kingdom emphasized the necessity for Baghdad to prevent its territory from becoming a platform for launching assaults. Saudi Arabia reiterated its determination to protect its security and sovereignty and deter aggressors, reserving the right to respond to actions targeting its energy facilities. The Ministry of Defense had previously reported intercepting drones aimed at oil facilities in the Eastern Region and Riyadh, though no casualties or material damage were specified.

The kingdom underlines the necessity for the Iraqi government to adopt all necessary measures to ensure that its territory is not used as a platform for launching attacks.

This incident marks another instance of Saudi air defenses intercepting drones from Iraqi territory, with similar events occurring previously, including in May. In April, following another drone attack, Saudi Arabia summoned the Iraqi ambassador to protest the "continuous and flagrant drone attacks and threats launched from Iraqi territory against Saudi Arabia and other Gulf countries."

Iraq hosts numerous pro-Iranian Shiite militias, which, despite being integrated into the Iraqi Armed Forces, operate independently to advance Iran's interests. These militias have targeted various Gulf countries since the outbreak of the Iran-Iraq war in late February. Baghdad has condemned these actions, while the United States has pressured the Iraqi government to disarm these groups, a process currently stalled and due to conclude by the end of September.
