Saxony-Anhalt CDU chief Schulze to discuss consequences after election defeat

Sven Schulze did not say on election night whether he would draw personal consequences from the CDU’s defeat in Saxony-Anhalt. The state party leader said he would discuss the next steps in Berlin and Magdeburg.

“I’m going to Berlin tomorrow, where there is a federal executive committee meeting, and tomorrow evening there will be a state executive committee meeting. There I will make a procedural proposal to the CDU of Saxony-Anhalt. But we will also discuss that tomorrow in the state executive committee,” Schulze said in Magdeburg.

He did not explain what the proposal would cover. It could involve personnel consequences after the party’s clear loss in the state election, but the minister-president left that question open.

The acting CDU state executive is due to meet on Monday morning for consultations. Initial calls for Schulze to resign emerged after the poor result. Former Education Minister Eva Feußner demanded his resignation, while the Junge Union called for the entire state executive to step down.
