Saxony-Anhalt: Counseling centers report rise in discrimination cases

Counseling centers in the German state of Saxony-Anhalt are reporting a surge in discrimination and racist incidents, reaching unprecedented levels. The "Entknoten" counseling center, for example, registered 67 cases in the first half of 2026, surpassing the previous record of 81 cases in all of 2025. Other organizations, including Ofek, the Mobile Victim Counseling, and the Saxony-Anhalt Anti-Discrimination Agency, have also observed a rise in incidents this year.

"Discrimination occurs in all areas of life," stated Janine Weidanz from the Anti-Discrimination Agency. She noted a particular increase in such incidents within the workplace and schools. Her agency recorded 87 cases in the first half of 2026, up from 74 in the same period last year. Weidanz emphasized that the reported numbers are likely "just the tip of the iceberg," as many individuals do not come forward due to fear of public exposure.

Adding to the unease, counselors and those affected are experiencing growing uncertainty in light of the upcoming state election and the possibility of the AfD party participating in the government. The AfD has previously announced plans to cut state subsidies and take a strict stance against migrants. Experts stress the importance of political support and long-term financial security for specialized counseling services. The state network of migrant organizations is reportedly watching the election outcome with concern.
