Saxony-Anhalt election: AfD leads with 44.4% as coalition arithmetic takes shape

The AfD was far ahead in Saxony-Anhalt's 2026 state election, according to the latest projection shown in the live results overview. At 5:26 p.m., ZDF put the party at 44.4%, a gain of 23.6 percentage points compared with 2021. The CDU stood at 18.2%, down 18.9 points.

The projection showed the Left at 9.2%, the Greens at 8.7% and the SPD at 8.6%. Those five parties were listed as certain to enter the Landtag. The BSW, at 4.8%, remained just below the five-percent threshold, while the FDP stood at 2.4%.

The figures left a complicated coalition picture in Magdeburg. The AfD alone was shown with 41 seats in the 83-member parliament. A majority without the AfD would require 42 seats, which the overview said could be reached by a CDU-SPD-Greens coalition with support, or tolerance, from the Left. A CDU-SPD-Greens combination alone was listed at 33 seats.

The figures remained projections rather than a completed count. The overview, updated at 7:30 p.m. on September 6, said no seat distribution data had yet been entered. The constituency map showed zero of 41 constituencies counted, and the table of constituency results was still waiting for the first completed returns.

The live page was designed to track which candidates won each constituency, party gains and losses, and whether smaller parties crossed the threshold. Its latest figures showed the AfD's lead clearly, but the final composition of the Landtag and the practical coalition options still depended on the count and on parties near the threshold.
