Saxony CDU Conservative Group Calls for End to Coalition With SPD

Saxony's conservative Heimatunion faction wants Michael Kretschmer to end his minority government with the Social Democrats and return the state CDU to what it calls its conservative roots.

The demand followed the CDU's setback in the Saxony-Anhalt state election. The group said the party needed a maximum of “pure CDU” without continuing compromises with left-wing parties. It also called for the end of the consultation mechanism in the state parliament and for an “honest minority government.”

Heimatunion said the Saxony-Anhalt result continued a long-standing trend, even though the AfD narrowly missed a majority of seats. Voters, it argued, were deeply dissatisfied with CDU policy. The group accused federal leaders of sacrificing key parts of a convincing CDU election program to agreements with the SPD, Greens and Left Party.

The faction has repeatedly advocated a pragmatic approach to the AfD and questioned the party's so-called firewall against cooperation. Heimatunion leader Sven Eppinger said people in Germany's states were seeing governments led by the CDU pursue policies shaped heavily by left-wing partners despite clear center-right election results.

“The incompatibility resolution of 2018 has been softened to the left in recent years, while the firewall to the right has grown ever higher,” Eppinger said. He argued that this had pushed policy further left, producing results harmful to Germany. Voters, he added, saw that “the CDU cannot keep its election promises with its current partners,” because dependence on left-wing coalition and consultation partners prevented the party from following the routes set out in the CDU/CSU's 2025 federal election program.
