Saxony's oldest resident celebrates 112th birthday

Ilse Neumann, residing in Taucha near Leipzig, is celebrating her 112th birthday, making her likely the oldest woman in the German state of Saxony and one of the oldest people in Germany. Born on July 23, 1914, Neumann's life spans over a century of profound historical change.

Her long life has encompassed the era of the German Empire, two World Wars, the division and reunification of Germany, and the dawn of the digital age. Neumann, a former tailor, has lived in the DRK retirement home in Taucha since 2019. Taucha's mayor, Tobias Meier, was among those expected to attend her birthday celebration.

Neumann experienced periods of scarcity, often sewing her own clothes inspired by shop window displays. After her husband's death in 1976, she lived alone for many years, though she maintained close relationships with neighbors' children, who continue to support her. The couple had no children of their own.

While it is officially difficult to determine the absolute oldest person in Germany, Neumann is widely recognized as Saxony's oldest resident and among the nation's oldest living individuals. The number of centenarians in Germany is on the rise, with approximately 17,900 people aged 100 or older recorded at the end of 2024, a 24% increase since 2011.
