Schalke frustrate Bayern in goalless Bundesliga classic

Schalke 04’s players were celebrated as heroes at Veltins Arena after the newly promoted side frustrated Bayern Munich in a goalless Bundesliga classic. Bayern dominated possession, but Schalke’s determined defending secured a 0-0 draw.

The result offered Schalke a major lift after its return to the top flight began with a 3-0 defeat at Augsburg. Bayern, meanwhile, lost the league lead. Freiburg, Borussia Dortmund and Elversberg all sit above them with six points from two matches.

Loris Karius made the difference for Schalke. The experienced goalkeeper stopped everything Bayern sent toward him, including a spectacular save from Harry Kane’s powerful shot in the closing minutes. Kane had started on the bench and entered for the second half, but even his arrival could not break Schalke’s resistance.

Bayern finished with more than 80% of the ball and brought on further attacking options, including Jamal Musiala, who returned after collapsing in a preseason friendly. Schalke also threatened on quick counterattacks, although its focus shifted almost entirely to defending late in the match. Bayern’s failure to score marked its first goalless Bundesliga outing in a year and a half.
