School closed in Loma de Cabrera over educator conflict, students suffer

Students in Loma de Cabrera are paying the price for a protracted dispute between educators and school administration, with their classrooms locked and learning disrupted. The La Ceiba Basic School has been inaccessible for days, leaving children without education as a conflict between teachers and the school's director escalates.

According to Yecenia Recio, director of Educational District 13-05, the crisis ignited when a group of teachers formally accused the school's director of alleged mistreatment. They presented documentation to district authorities, initiating meetings and a mediation process. An initial point of contention involved a performance evaluation, which some teachers claimed was conducted unfairly, leading to corrections by the district's technical team.

However, the disagreements persisted. Following further complaints of alleged mistreatment, the Educational District engaged in separate discussions with the director, management team, teachers, and community representatives. The aim was to prevent the administrative and labor conflict from impacting the school year, but the school's doors were ultimately padlocked by community members.

"The students are the most affected," Recio emphasized, stressing that adult conflicts should be resolved through institutional channels without sacrificing children's right to education. The school director has agreed to a temporary transfer to the District Office while the Regional Education Office develops an intervention plan. Although teachers were ready to resume classes, the school's closure prevented a return to normalcy. Educational authorities are now intensifying talks with parents and community members, hoping to reach an agreement to reopen the center and reinstate classes promptly.
