Schools in Latvia Still Seek Teachers as New Academic Year Nears

Some Latvian schools are still looking for teachers on August 31, with the new academic year approaching and gaps remaining in their staffing.

The vacancies cover more than subject teachers. Schools are also seeking special-education teachers and other support specialists, leaving some institutions uncertain about how they will meet the requirements set by Latvia’s Cabinet of Ministers.

Aleksejs Mackevičs, director of Biķernieku Primary School, said the school would try to divide the duties among existing staff. He warned that it would be very difficult to provide all the required services because teachers and support specialists simply are not available.

Delfi compiled current vacancy data from Latvia’s State Employment Agency and examined how schools that are still recruiting plan to keep the learning process running.
