Search underway for woman swept away by river current in Panama

A search is underway for a 24-year-old woman who disappeared after being swept away by the current of the La Angostura river in Panama's Coclé province. The incident occurred Sunday afternoon in the Cañaveral sector of Penonomé district.

The woman was part of a group from Panama City who had initially visited a beach before moving to the river for recreational activities. Around 12:15 p.m., she was reportedly caught by the river's current. Another young person who fell into the water managed to get out and is reported to be stable.

Following the report, agents from the Fire Department, the National Civil Protection System (Sinaproc), the National Aeronaval Service (Senan), and the National Police were dispatched to the area to commence search efforts. Sinaproc confirmed that two individuals fell into the water, but only one was able to exit. The other remains missing.

Emergency teams are actively engaged in the operation to locate the young woman. Sinaproc noted that the river's current has not significantly increased, but the area contains deep holes that pose a risk to swimmers. Authorities are reiterating their call for the public to exercise extreme caution during recreational activities in rivers, particularly in areas with strong currents and irregular depths.
