Seasonal opportunism: Rental prices in northern destinations sting families' pockets

As Morocco's summer vacation season reaches its peak, popular coastal towns like Martil and the surrounding beaches are experiencing a sharp increase in rental prices for furnished apartments. This surge is causing significant frustration among vacationers and posing financial challenges for Moroccan families seeking affordable accommodation.

The price jump is particularly noticeable in areas along the coast, with nightly rates for apartments overlooking the sea or near the boardwalk escalating from 250-300 dirhams in the winter to as high as 1000 dirhams during August. Even apartments in less prime locations are seeing rates between 400 and 600 dirhams per night, depending on their size and amenities. This trend extends to related tourist services, with prices for fast food and beverages also increasing.

In the town of M'Diq, similar price increases are observed, with apartments near the main street renting for around 400 dirhams per night, while those in inner streets range from 250 to 300 dirhams. Tourist residences with swimming pools are charging between 700 and 800 dirhams, with some luxury options exceeding 1000 dirhams per night.

Visitors from cities like Fez have expressed dismay, pointing out that the condition of many apartments, with worn furniture and poor maintenance, does not justify the high summer rates. Some agents have labeled these practices as "seasonal opportunism," warning of potential negative impacts on domestic tourism.
