Security to be strengthened at Girón prison after 50 more high-risk inmates transferred

Palogordo maximum-security prison in Girón, Santander, will receive specialized equipment after 50 more high-risk inmates were transferred there during the past week. The transfers bring the recent total to 66 prisoners considered highly dangerous by authorities.

The first 16 inmates arrived recently, after Abelardo de la Espriella took office as Colombia’s president. Bucaramanga Mayor Cristian Portilla later disclosed that another 50 prisoners would be moved to the facility, prompting concern about the security risks for prison staff.

The INPEC workers’ union called for an urgent intervention. It cited previous attacks and threats against prison employees, including an incident in which a worker was killed before reaching his post. Portilla also questioned whether the prison had enough tools to manage the new population safely.

The planned reinforcement includes body cameras, inspection equipment, metal detectors and drones for surveillance. Authorities will also provide ballistic vests and other protective equipment for INPEC personnel. The measures are intended to strengthen controls inside and outside the prison and improve safety for guards, administrative staff and inmates.
