SEDC to Launch Agro-Mechanization Program in Enugu After Land Inspections

The South East Development Commission (SEDC) has completed inspections of approximately 4,000 hectares of land in Enugu State, Nigeria. This extensive land assessment is a precursor to the launch of the commission's agro-mechanization program, designed to significantly increase food production and bolster food security across the region.

The inspection followed a series of crucial stakeholder engagement meetings conducted throughout Enugu's three senatorial zones. Dr. Cliff Ogbede, the SEDC's Executive Director for Natural Resources, Agriculture, and Rural Development, led these discussions with support from the Enugu State Government. The commission emphasized that these engagements were vital for securing community buy-in and ensuring the program's smooth implementation.

In preparation for the flag-off of the South East Development Commission’s agro-mechanisation projects, my team and I, with the support of the Enugu State Government, concluded a series of community stakeholder engagements across Enugu’s three senatorial zones.

Specific sites examined include about 2,000 hectares in Nkpologwu, Uzo-Uwani Local Government Area, and another 2,000 hectares in Elugwu Akwu-Achi, Oji River Local Government Area. Ogbede reported positive responses from the host communities, highlighting that these engagements are foundational to the SEDC Vision 2050 and the South East Agricultural Development Programme. The initiative seeks to promote commercial agriculture and empower youth.

Ogbede further explained that clarifying land access, securing community support, and addressing security concerns were key objectives before commencing the pilot projects. The inspected sites also included Nomeh Unataeze in Nkanu East LGA. Local officials and residents in Uzo-Uwani and Oji River LGAs welcomed the project, viewing it as a collaborative effort to expand agricultural potential and stimulate rural development. The broad support from traditional rulers, community leaders, and stakeholders underscores the program's promising outlook.
