Seimas to consider proposal to lift term limits for Tripartite Council members

Lithuanian lawmakers are considering a proposal to lift term limits for members of the Tripartite Council, a key advisory body on social, economic, and labor policies. The move, presented by Tomas Tomilinas, chairman of the Social Affairs and Labor Committee, seeks to alter the council's fundamental formation principle regarding member tenures.

Tomilinas recalled the enthusiasm in the 2016-2020 Seimas session to institutionalize term limits across various sectors, including education, which he now views as having led to "many mistakes." He argued that the current restriction on Tripartite Council members' terms hinders the appointment of suitable and competent individuals.

We propose to change the main formation principle of the Tripartite Council, which is related to the terms of its members.

"In my opinion, perhaps these mistakes should be corrected," Tomilinas stated, advocating for a liberalization of the Tripartite Council's operations. He emphasized allowing individuals the freedom to work where they wish, especially since the positions are voluntary. This initiative reportedly originated from former Prime Minister Inga Ruginienė, now back as Minister of Social Security and Labor.

If approved, the amendment would nullify the Labor Code's provision limiting Tripartite Council membership to a maximum of two consecutive terms. Currently, the council comprises representatives delegated by the government, employer organizations, and trade unions, with each term lasting four years. The council plays a crucial role in advising the Seimas and the Government on critical policy matters.

In my opinion, perhaps these mistakes should be corrected. Therefore, I propose to support such a liberalization of the Tripartite Council's activities. Let's not limit people's creativity, let's not limit their ability to work where they want, especially since it is voluntary work.
