Seismic-resistant vs. anti-seismic: The correct term in Colombia

In Colombia, the correct technical term for buildings designed to withstand earthquakes is "sismorresistente" or "sismo resistente," rather than "antisísmico." This distinction is crucial in understanding the country's building codes and safety standards.

The Ministry of Housing, City, and Territory emphasizes that seismic-resistant construction sets minimum requirements for buildings and structures in Colombia. The primary goals are to protect human life, minimize property damage, and ensure that essential facilities remain operational after seismic events. This approach is codified in the Colombian Seismic-Resistant Construction Regulation, NSR-10, which aligns with Law 400 of 1997 and considers Colombia's specific seismic conditions.

However, being seismic-resistant does not equate to immunity from earthquakes or complete prevention of damage. The regulations are designed to ensure that structures behave adequately under the forces generated by ground movement. The Colombian Geological Service (SGC) uses the term "construcción sismorresistente" in its public recommendations, advising people in such buildings to seek safe shelter away from falling objects during an earthquake.

While "antisísmico" might appear in some documents, "sismorresistente" is the technically precise term when referring to compliance with Colombian regulations. The SGC's understanding of the country's seismic threat informs these design and construction requirements, helping to estimate potential damage and losses from seismic events.
