Selangor to review wild animal management procedures after dog's death

Selangor's local government authorities are set to re-evaluate their procedures for managing wild animals, prompted by a recent incident in which a dog died during a capture operation.

The review will encompass all local government bodies within the state, aiming to ensure that enforcement actions are carried out effectively, safely, and humanely. Key aspects to be examined include training protocols, operational procedures, and collaboration with the Department of Veterinary Services and other relevant stakeholders. The state government emphasized the need to balance public safety with animal welfare.

Datuk Ng Suee Lim, the State Executive Councillor for Local Government and Tourism, stated that every enforcement operation must be conducted professionally and in compliance with established laws and procedures. He expressed the state government's regret over the incident that led to the dog's death in Taman Teluk Gedung Indah, Port Klang. The Royal Klang City Council (MBDK) has filed a police report, and the Royal Malaysia Police have opened an investigation into the matter.

"The state government is fully entrusting the police to conduct an independent, transparent, and professional investigation," Ng said, urging the public to respect the investigative process and refrain from speculation. The state government reiterated its commitment to ensuring public safety while strengthening animal welfare practices and maintaining public confidence in government institutions. This review follows concerns raised by the Tengku Permaisuri of Selangor regarding animal cruelty, which she described as contrary to law and a reflection of a failure in compassion.
