Selena returns to music through Beyoncé in an impossible duet

Beyoncé has brought Selena Quintanilla back into the musical spotlight with a track that joins two songs separated by language, time, and musical worlds.

The story begins in late-1990s Houston, where a young Beyoncé repeatedly heard Selena, the Tejano singer, on local radio. Years later, after becoming one of the world’s most influential artists, Beyoncé still carried that memory with her.

In 2007, she released “Irreemplazable,” a Spanish-language EP that included a version of her hit “Irreplaceable.” Nearly two decades later, the song returned in a new form on the 20th-anniversary edition of Beyoncé’s album B’Day, released on Sept. 4, 2026, her 45th birthday.

Among the 31 tracks, “Irreemplazable (Como La Flor)” drew particular attention. The song combines the Spanish lyrics of “Irreplaceable” with the musical foundation of Selena’s 1992 classic “Como La Flor,” including vocal fragments from Selena herself.

The release required approval from the estate of the late “Queen of Tejano,” a step described as uncommon since Selena’s death in 1995, according to Variety and CultureMap. Chris Pérez, Selena’s widower, announced the track on Instagram and responded to disappointed fans by writing, “Some people can be a little overdramatic sometimes,” according to Complex.

Beyoncé also shared a clip recalling that she met Selena at Houston Galleria before Beyoncé found fame with Destiny’s Child.
