Self-checkout machines face scrutiny amid rising theft concerns

The proliferation of self-checkout machines in retail stores, while offering convenience, is increasingly linked to a rise in shoplifting. Experts estimate that losses at these automated checkouts can be between 15 and 30 percent higher than at staffed checkouts, with some cases showing inventory discrepancies up to 39 percent greater.

Self-checkouts are now a common sight in supermarkets, discount stores, and drugstores, and are even appearing in hardware and fashion retailers. While many customers, particularly younger ones, appreciate the speed and ease, older shoppers often express caution due to a lack of personal interaction and fear of technical difficulties.

Official statistics on shoplifting in Germany for 2025 recorded 357,651 incidents, a 5.7 percent decrease from the previous year. However, the retail sector warns that this figure only represents reported cases, and the actual number is significantly higher. The debate continues on whether self-checkouts contribute to this trend.

Major retail chains like Aldi Süd and Rossmann are reluctant to discuss internal security processes or connect self-checkouts directly to theft, citing business sensitivity. Aldi Nord uses self-checkouts in a limited number of stores. Rewe claims self-checkouts have not significantly impacted their theft rates and highlights multiple security layers, including staff, technical controls, video surveillance, and receipt-activated exit gates.

Lidl declined to comment on the link between theft and self-checkouts but confirmed adherence to standard security procedures and reporting of all theft incidents. Kaufland, however, is reportedly planning to expand its self-checkout offerings, suggesting a continued industry trend despite the associated challenges.
