Senamhi forecasts morning fog and increased wind in Lima and 7 other regions starting April 21

The National Meteorology and Hydrology Service of Peru (Senamhi) has issued a significant weather alert, forecasting increased wind intensity and morning fog across Lima and seven other coastal regions. This 'yellow alert,' effective from Tuesday, April 21, through Thursday, April 23, signals the potential for moderate to strong winds, particularly in coastal districts. The forecast also includes the presence of cloud cover, mist, and fog, especially during the early morning hours, conditions attributed to the influx of southern currents and the influence of the South Pacific Anticyclone.

Senamhi specialists detailed that the meteorological notice, N.° 153, will be in effect for 61 hours and encompasses potential impacts in Áncash, Arequipa, Callao, Ica, La Libertad, Lambayeque, Lima, and Piura. Expected wind speeds are projected to reach approximately 34 km/h in the northern coast, 33 km/h in the central coast, and around 23 km/h in the southern coast on Tuesday. These speeds are anticipated to increase on Wednesday and Thursday, with gusts potentially reaching up to 37 km/h in the north and 35 km/h in the center, and up to 38 km/h in Ica.

In response to these forecasts, the National Institute of Civil Defense (Indeci) has urged local and regional governments to conduct thorough technical safety inspections of buildings. The aim is to assess infrastructure integrity and mitigate risks to the public. Indeci's recommendations include securing roofs, reinforcing window glass, and anchoring any structures susceptible to detachment due to strong winds. They also advise caution around electrical equipment, sharp objects, and unstable materials.

Furthermore, Indeci has provided specific guidance for coastal areas, emphasizing the need to properly secure vessels to prevent accidents. Residents are encouraged to wear warm, waterproof clothing, consume hot beverages, and seek immediate medical attention for any respiratory symptoms or allergic reactions. This proactive approach by Senamhi and Indeci aims to ensure public safety and preparedness in the face of the predicted adverse weather conditions.
