Senior Outsmarts Scam Caller, Police Arrest Suspect in Germany

An elderly man in Schwaben, Germany, successfully outsmarted a scammer attempting a "shock call" fraud, leading to the arrest of a 20-year-old suspect. The 83-year-old victim recognized the fraudulent scheme and alerted the police, who then set a trap.

The scammers employed their typical tactic: an imposter called the senior citizen, claiming to be a lawyer. The caller demanded 65,000 euros in bail to prevent the man's daughter from being imprisoned following an alleged accident. During the conversation, the amount was escalated to 100,000 euros. The victim, feigning agreement, arranged a meeting point in downtown Memmingen.

Authorities were waiting at the designated location and apprehended the 20-year-old suspect. The incident occurred on a Thursday afternoon. The criminal police department issued a warning, reminding the public that neither the police nor the judiciary ever demand payments over the phone. They urged citizens to be suspicious and never hand over money or valuables to unknown individuals.

The suspect has been placed in investigative custody. This case highlights the persistent threat of such scams and the importance of public awareness and vigilance.
