Seoul Marks 81st Liberation Day with Rich Cultural and Artistic Events

Seoul is alive with a diverse array of cultural and artistic events designed to help citizens reflect on the meaning of liberation ahead of the 81st anniversary of Korea's Liberation Day. These commemorative activities aim to deepen the public's understanding and appreciation of the nation's history and the value of independence.

Among the highlights is a book curation at the Seoul Library, featuring foreign literary works and photo collections that explore themes of imperialism and colonialism. The exhibition includes titles like Min Jin Lee's "Pachinko," which delves into the pain of colonial rule and the subsequent history of Korea. The library hopes this curation will foster a shared sense of peace among visitors.

History is being brought to life through performances and night tours. The Seoul Foundation for Arts and Culture presents a special play, "The Theater Runs!," recounting the journey of the Goryeo Theater, an organization that preserved Korean language and art amidst the forced migration of Koreans in Vladivostok in 1932. Additionally, a night history tour, 'Jangchungdan Night Walk,' will guide participants through significant sites related to the independence movement.

Further enriching the commemoration, the Seodaemun Prison History Hall will offer a unique experience: a hologram conversation with independence activist Yu Gwan-sun. This advanced exhibit, along with others showcasing the stories of various independence fighters, aims to connect visitors with the past. Families can also participate in workshops, including creating their own Taegeukgi (Korean flag) using woodblock printing, and learn about the history of the national symbols. A special exhibition also honors the 150th anniversary of Baekbeom Kim Gu's birth, featuring artworks inspired by independence leaders.
