Seoul National University Professor Wins International Microbiology Award

Professor Cheon Jong-sik from Seoul National University's Department of Life Sciences has been honored with a prestigious international award for his significant contributions to the field of microbial systematics. The University of Queensland's Academic Board announced on July 21 (local time) that Professor Cheon is the recipient of the Van Niel International Prize for Prokaryotic Taxonomy for the 2020-2024 term.

The award specifically recognizes Professor Cheon's extensive work in classifying prokaryotes, the domain of single-celled organisms lacking a nucleus. His research has been instrumental in advancing the understanding and categorization of bacterial species. The International Committee on Systematics of Prokaryotes (ICSP) Executive Committee recommended him for this honor, acknowledging his profound impact on the discipline.
