Seoul Police Team Leader Indicted for Dropping Charges in Bribe-for-Influence Case

A former detective team leader at Seoul's Gangnam Police Station faces charges of bribery and abuse of power for allegedly dropping fraud charges against the husband of influencer Yang Jung-won. The team leader, identified as Song, is accused of accepting money from the husband, Lee, in exchange for influencing the investigation.

Prosecutors allege that Song changed Yang's legal status from a suspect to a witness in the fraud case. This maneuver effectively removed her from the investigation, as the law does not permit appeals against decisions concerning witnesses. The National Police Agency officer, identified only as Han, was also indicted for facilitating the bribe.

The investigation into Song's actions began after Lee allegedly offered bribes to influence the case. The connection between Lee and Song was reportedly facilitated by Han, who had a prior relationship with Lee. The case highlights potential corruption within the police force and the manipulation of legal procedures to benefit influential individuals.
