Seoul to reach 39 C as heatwave grips South Korea

South Korea is bracing for intense heat as temperatures are forecast to soar to 39 degrees Celsius (102 Fahrenheit) in Seoul on Thursday. Heatwave advisories, including the highest level 'heavy heat wave warning,' have been issued for most regions across the nation, indicating a severe and potentially life-threatening heatwave.

The Korea Meteorological Administration anticipates that the highest perceived temperatures will reach around 35 degrees Celsius nationwide. Many areas are also expected to experience tropical nights, with minimum temperatures remaining above 25 degrees Celsius. The daytime high temperatures are predicted to range from 30 to 39 degrees Celsius, significantly above the seasonal average of 29 to 33 degrees Celsius.

Areas like Seoul, Incheon, and parts of Gyeonggi Province, as well as Gwangyang in South Jeolla Province, are facing particularly extreme heat conditions. Authorities are urging caution for outdoor workers in fields, construction sites, and roads, where perceived temperatures may exceed official readings. The elderly, infants, and individuals with chronic illnesses are strongly advised to avoid outdoor activities during the hottest parts of the day.

To combat the persistent heat and tropical nights, residents are advised to use air conditioning and fans to maintain comfortable indoor temperatures. Staying hydrated is crucial, but consuming alcohol and caffeine should be avoided. Some regions may experience showers and rain, with light rain expected in Jeju Island and scattered showers in Daejeon, Sejong, South Chungcheong, and North Jeolla provinces.
