September 2026 events guide: What to do in Mexico City

Mexico City’s September calendar is filling up with events tied to the country’s festive month, including traditional performances, regional food and architecture.

Oaxaca will come to the capital with the Guelaguetza of Don José Estefan Acar, known as Don Pepe, at Plaza de las Estrellas. Visitors can expect traditional dances, crafts, food, giant alebrijes and an exhibition of pieces made from corn husks. Workshops called “Night of the Radishes” and “Paint an Alebrije” will also be available. A raffle for two Oaxacan baskets will run on Saturdays and Sundays for people who buy items at the stalls.

The event will continue through September 13, from 8:15 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily. The Guelaguetza dances will take place on Saturdays and Sundays at 3:30 p.m. Admission is free.

Coyoacán will host the Artisanal Coffee and Chocolate Fair on September 11, 12 and 13. The program includes tastings of beans from Veracruz, Chiapas, Puebla, Guerrero and Oaxaca, along with product sales, handicrafts, live music and regional dishes. The fair will run from noon to 8 p.m. at Avenida Francisco Sosa 171, with free admission.

The Mextrópoli architecture festival will take place from September 17 to 20 at venues including Teatro de la Ciudad Esperanza Iris, Alameda Central, Plaza Manuel Tolsá, the Museo de Arte Popular and Colegio de San Ildefonso. Its theme, “Movements,” invites visitors to consider the forces and transformations shaping the city. The opening will be held September 17 at 6:30 p.m. at Colegio de San Ildefonso. Tickets at the Teatro de la Ciudad range from 2,467 to 3,910 pesos, while other venues will announce their prices closer to the festival.
