Serbia and North Macedonia join the Vertical Corridor as memorandum is signed

Serbia and North Macedonia are being added to the Vertical Gas Corridor under a memorandum signed in Thessaloniki on September 4, 2026. Romania participated through Transgaz at the signing, held during the 10th South-East Europe Energy Forum.

The memorandum covers the inclusion of Transportgas Serbia and NOMAGAS JSC Skopje as new members. Ministers from Greece, Bulgaria, Cyprus and North Macedonia attended, alongside gas transmission operators from Greece, Bulgaria, Romania, Moldova, Hungary, Slovakia, Ukraine, North Macedonia and Serbia, as well as US officials.

Romanian Energy Ministry Secretary of State Cristian Bușoi described energy security as a central part of national security. He said the extension would strengthen Romania’s and the region’s energy security by diversifying gas supply sources and routes.

Energy security is one of the most important dimensions of national security, because energy is the foundation of the functioning of any modern state.

Bușoi also said Transgaz’s interconnection investments, together with future gas resources from Neptun Deep, could help Romania use its geostrategic position and become an energy and economic hub in Europe.

Ion Sterian, Transgaz’s director general, said the expansion toward Serbia and North Macedonia would improve regional connectivity and resilience while supporting a more integrated and competitive gas market. He said the operators would cooperate on infrastructure development, increasing transport capacity and securing financing for the required investments.

The Vertical Gas Corridor represents a key element of energy cooperation between Romania, the United States and the countries of Central, Eastern and Southeastern Europe.
