Serbia Battles 178 Fires; Focus on Deliblatska Peščara and Danube Pumping Stations

Serbia battled 178 fires across the country in the past 24 hours, with two fires still active, according to the Republican Headquarters for Emergency Situations. The current priorities include suppressing a significant fire in the Deliblatska Peščara region and restoring normal operations at the "Bezdan" and "Bogojevo" pumping stations along the upper Danube River. The fire in Deliblatska Peščara has consumed about 500 hectares. Firefighting efforts are being hampered by the challenging terrain and prevailing weather conditions. Responders from the Ministry of Internal Affairs and "Vojvodinašume" are engaged at maximum capacity. Measures are being taken to encircle the fire with firebreaks to prevent its further spread. Officials have stated that no structures are currently threatened by the Deliblatska Peščara fire. However, police have restricted access to the affected area within the sand dune reserve. The Republican Headquarters for Emergency Situations convened to discuss the national situation amid unfavorable weather and high temperatures. Regarding the Danube River's water levels, a slight improvement has been observed at the "Bogojevo" pumping station. One generator has resumed operation, and water intake has been temporarily banned to facilitate the introduction of water into the southern section of the Danube-Tisa-Danube Hydro-System. Prime Minister Macut announced that the Republican Headquarters for Emergency Situations will convene again soon to decide on additional measures.
