Serbia Battles 31 Active Wildfires Amidst High Temperatures and Drought

Serbia is facing a significant firefighting challenge, with 31 active wildfires currently burning across the country. In the last seven days alone, authorities have recorded around 900 fires in open spaces, most of which have been brought under control.

The most critical areas include the Deliblatska Peščara near Kovin, where the fire has consumed over 2,000 hectares, as well as fires on Stolovi mountain near Kraljevo, in Breznica in the Bujanovac municipality, and near Gornji Brestovac in the Bojnik municipality.

High temperatures, drought, and unfavorable weather conditions have put all relevant services and institutions on high alert. Despite the complex conditions, the Republican Emergency Situations Headquarters reported that there have been no human casualties and residential buildings have been protected. All forces remain engaged until the situation is fully stabilized.

The headquarters also reviewed the hydrological situation, noting a slight increase in the water levels of the Danube and the Danube-Tisa-Danube hydro system after a period of extremely low levels. While this is a positive trend, the situation is being closely monitored. Low water levels continue to hinder river traffic, with vessels operating at reduced capacity. The energy supply remains stable, though it is continuously monitored due to high temperatures and increased consumption. Authorities are also closely monitoring surface water quality, water supply, and air quality, especially in areas affected by low water levels and drought.
