Serbia's Ruling Party Launches Tent Campaign Ahead of Elections

Serbia's ruling Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) is actively campaigning across the country with large gatherings, often held under tents, even though parliamentary elections have not yet been officially called. While speculation suggests elections could occur in October or November, the SNS appears to be in full campaign mode, hosting events in numerous towns and cities. These "people's festivals" are framed as celebrations of "Serbia's victory," despite the electoral race not having begun. Key figures, including SNS leader Miloš Vučević and government ministers, are frequent attendees. President Aleksandar Vučić has also appeared at some events, emphasizing the party's unity and the importance of a decisive win. The core message at these rallies is consistent: the people have preserved the state, elections are imminent, and victory is essential. Vučević has urged supporters to turn out in force, stating, "When the elections come, everyone to the polls. Everyone to the polls so we can win everywhere." He has also promised victories in specific regions, such as Novi Sad and Vojvodina. Ministers echo this sentiment, with one stating, "If there is no Vučić, there is nothing." The gatherings are accompanied by music and festivities, with politicians like Darko Glišić using the events to project an image of national success and predict a "hot summer, an interesting autumn, and a beautiful New Year" following their anticipated victory. The party is directing all resources towards securing an electoral win, aiming to counter what they describe as a "blockers' plan" for the elections.
