Serbian Progressive Party accuses protest groups of marking anniversary of alleged violence and civil war attempt

The Novi Sad branch of the Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) has accused protest groups of commemorating an anniversary that, according to the SNS, marks a day when they "wanted to kill people and incite civil war" in the city. The SNS stated that those who identify as "assemblies" and "plenumists" are in fact "the most naked violent individuals" who attempted to harm those with differing views a year prior.

According to the SNS, these groups are celebrating "the greatest shame and disgrace in the recent history of Serbian politics." The party alleges that the protesters aimed to overthrow Serbia, its democratic order, and institutions, intending to establish a "dictatorship of violence and the street." Under such a regime, the SNS claims, anyone with a different opinion would be silenced and denied political participation or the right to vote.

The SNS described the situation in Novi Sad a year ago as a precursor to what Serbia would become if these groups gained power, characterizing it as "ruined and destroyed." The party claims that "organized batons brigades" attacked women and children, and that people defending Serbia were hit with stones. They specifically mentioned an incident where a "hero from Košare" was injured by "plenumists and assembly members" in Novi Sad, despite having survived combat.

The SNS also reported that their facilities were destroyed and that their members and sympathizers were attacked for hours with stones, clubs, and pyrotechnics, with the "clear desire to kill us." The party asserts that dozens were seriously injured and that ambulances were prevented from reaching the wounded, attributing the situation partly to the "passive" stance of some police officers. Despite these alleged actions, the SNS stated they "offered the bravest resistance" to defend the constitution, democracy, and freedom, crediting the intervention of "Kobre" (an elite military unit) for preventing a worse outcome. The party expects legal accountability for the violence and attempted murders, urging prosecutors and courts to act accordingly, and expressed concern that similar incidents might be attempted again.
