Serena Williams Eliminated in First Round Comeback at Wimbledon

Serena Williams' return to Wimbledon ended abruptly in the first round, as the American tennis legend was defeated by world No. 87 Maya Joint of Australia. Joint secured a 6-3, 6-7 (6), 6-3 victory in a match that marked Williams' first appearance at the tournament in four years.

Williams, now 44, had announced her retirement in 2022 but recently decided to compete again, expressing a desire for her daughters, Olympia and Adira, to see her play. Her family, including father Alexis and sister Venus, watched from the players' box.

The first set saw Joint break Williams' serve to take a 5-3 lead, ultimately closing out the set on her own serve. In the second set, Joint again gained an early break. However, Williams fought back, breaking Joint's serve for the first time in the match. The set became a series of breaks, but Williams managed to win a tense ninth game and then took the tiebreak to level the match.

In the deciding third set, Williams secured her first lead by breaking Joint's serve in the third game. However, Joint immediately broke back and then gained a crucial advantage, which she maintained to the end of the match. Williams, a 23-time Grand Slam champion, had received a wildcard to participate in the prestigious tournament after her extended absence. She has won Wimbledon seven times previously and is scheduled to compete in the doubles competition with her sister Venus later in the week.
