Serious traffic accident on A1 near Karlovac: Six cars involved, two seriously injured

A severe traffic accident involving six vehicles unfolded on the A1 highway near Karlovac early on May 30, 2026, resulting in two individuals suffering serious injuries. The incident began around 1:10 AM when a 48-year-old driver, operating a vehicle with Kutina license plates and traveling towards Zagreb, deviated from his lane.

The driver struck a metal central barrier, which was propelled into the opposite lane. His vehicle continued to move uncontrollably, repeatedly hitting the barrier before coming to a stop. At this point, multiple vehicles traveling towards Karlovac encountered the debris in their path.

A car with Rijeka plates, driven by a 24-year-old, collided with the barrier and then continued moving uncontrollably, hitting the central barrier again. Subsequently, a truck driver from Gospić stopped to assist. Immediately after, a car with German plates, driven by a 71-year-old, also hit the barrier. In an attempt to avoid the debris, this car crossed the barrier and struck the rear of the Rijeka-plated car.

The collision caused the Rijeka-plated car to hit a 25-year-old female passenger who was outside the vehicle. The driver and two other passengers from the Rijeka-plated car managed to avoid being hit by jumping over the central barrier. The German-plated car then collided with the truck and its trailer. The 48-year-old driver and the 25-year-old female pedestrian sustained severe injuries. The 71-year-old driver and a 63-year-old passenger from his vehicle suffered minor injuries. A criminal complaint will be filed against the 48-year-old driver.
