Seven killed, 20 injured as heavy rains lash Punjab

Heavy rains have battered Punjab, Pakistan, leading to at least seven deaths and 20 injuries in the last 24 hours. The downpours, accompanied by strong winds, have caused widespread damage, including the collapse of house roofs and the death of livestock.

The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) reported 14 separate rain-related incidents across the province. In Lahore, three people died and five were injured due to roof collapses in different areas. Kasur reported two deaths, including a child, and three injuries from a house roof collapse. A woman died in Faisalabad after her roof caved in, and a child drowned in Gujranwala.

Punjab remained largely safe from flooding despite the ongoing monsoon spell, with water levels in all major rivers, including the Ravi and Sutlej, remaining within normal limits.

Further incidents included injuries from electrocution and animal shed collapses in various districts. Despite the monsoon spell, the PDMA stated that Punjab has largely remained safe from major flooding, with river water levels within normal limits. The heaviest rainfall was recorded in the Gujranwala and Rawalpindi divisions, particularly in Narowal, Jhelum, and Gujrat districts.

Authorities managed to avert major damage by promptly plugging breaches in a nullah and an embankment. The PDMA noted that monsoon-related incidents have claimed 22 lives and injured 183 people across Punjab so far this season. They urged citizens to report emergencies via the Rescue 1122 helpline and are monitoring aging electricity infrastructure to prevent accidents.
