Severe Thunderstorms Trigger Code Orange Alerts Across Romania, RO-ALERT Messages Issued

Severe thunderstorms are battering Bucharest and multiple counties across Romania, prompting authorities to issue Code Orange weather warnings and RO-ALERT messages to the public. The National Meteorological Administration (ANM) has forecast intense weather activity, including torrential downpours and frequent lightning.

In Bucharest, a Code Orange alert was active until 8:30 AM, warning of torrential rains accumulating 25-40 liters per square meter and frequent electrical discharges. Simultaneously, a Code Yellow was in effect for the mountainous region of Gorj county and the locality of Padeș, predicting heavy showers, lightning, wind gusts of 50-70 km/h, and small hail.

Several other regions are also experiencing severe weather. A Code Orange alert covered parts of Olt county, with forecasts of torrential rain, frequent lightning, strong winds reaching 70-90 km/h, and medium-sized hail. Similar conditions were reported in specific localities within Giurgiu and Teleorman counties, with warnings of heavy rainfall, lightning, strong gusts, and hail up to 4 cm in diameter.

Looking ahead, a broader Code Yellow for atmospheric instability is in effect from Wednesday morning until Thursday morning across Muntenia, Dobrogea, eastern Oltenia, southern Moldova, southwestern Transylvania, and parts of the Eastern and Southern Carpathians. This alert predicts periods of torrential rain, lightning, and wind gusts of 50-70 km/h, with isolated hail and significant water accumulation. Additionally, a Code Orange was issued for Constanța, Tulcea, Galați, Brăila, and parts of Ialomița and Călărași counties, anticipating substantial rainfall that could exceed 70 liters per square meter in some areas.
