Two firefighters die battling blaze near Bordeaux Airport amid severe wildfire season

A tragic incident near Bordeaux Airport has claimed the lives of two firefighters as they battled a blaze in a building close to the airport. The firefighters were aboard an intervention truck that became trapped and engulfed in flames, according to Marc Vermeulen, director of the Gironde rescue and fire service.

The fire, which broke out in a dense pine forest near Mérignac, required a massive response involving 120 personnel, 60 vehicles, and three aircraft. Vermeulen stated that the fire was eventually extinguished. The two firefighters died in the "first minutes of the attack phase" as they confronted "very violent dynamics" in the dense forest.

This incident occurs against the backdrop of an exceptionally severe wildfire season in France. Another fire in the Var department has already consumed 500 hectares, leading to the evacuation of over 150 people.

Meanwhile, fires are also raging in the Hautes-Alpes region, where flames have consumed 130 hectares in a steep mountainous area. Data from the European Effis system indicates that over 42,000 hectares have burned in France between January and mid-July, surpassing the previous record set in 2022. The country is facing unprecedented fire activity, with five departments placed on maximum fire risk alert.
